Sketching outdoors, whether on my travels or on home territory is an essential part of my creative practice.
Occasionally it provides inspiration for studio work but I do it mainly for the creative freedom it gives me & the joy of playing in a sketchbook.
It allows me to properly immerse myself in a landscape or environment & mark making in a sketchbook records things in a way that cannot be captured in a photograph.
I always have several different sketchbooks on the go at any one time, as I like to have a variety of sizes, formats & paper to choose from.
I have learnt to travel light, only taking what fits in a small rucksack so I can enjoy the walk too! If conditions are not favourable for sketching
using the camera on my phone can be a fun way of seeing the environment differently & can help me find places to revisit with my sketchbook another time.
